March Madness is finally here, and it’s time when college basketball grabs every fan's attention. The excitement of March Madness lies in shocking upsets, the rise of underdog teams, and the chance for glory. This tournament is a thrilling sporting event like no other. In this post, I will share the teams that I believe are strong contenders for deep runs, as well as those that might struggle. Whether you are filling out a bracket or placing bets, this guide will help you navigatethe unpredictable landscape of the NCAA tournament.

Bulls: Teams I'm Bullish On

St. John's

St. John's has shown impressive resilience this season, earning a most respectable 30 wins. Their key player, Julian Champagnie, averages over 19 points per game and can easily turn the tide in critical moments. With the right combination of veteran leadership and youthful talent, they could be a dark horse in the tournament. Plus, I love Rick Pitino!

Gonzaga

Gonzaga is a perennial powerhouse that consistently dominates. This season, they boast a 25-5 record. Watch for Gonzaga to bulldoze past their competition and make a significant run. Mark Few is primed for his team to shock the world by knocking off a #1 seed in the 2nd round.

BYU

BYU has been consistently strong, going 24-9 this season. With great coaching and a cerbral squad of talented athletes, they could upset higher seeds and secure at least a Sweet 16 spot. Their blend of shooting skill and strategic defense will be crucial. Don't sleep on this team.

UCLA

UCLA is ready for a breakout with a record of 22-10. Their mix of experienced players and rising stars creates an exciting dynamic. Their fast-paced, high-energy play style could lead to thrilling upsets in the tournament. The main thing is that UCLA's season doesn't start until March.

Drake

Drake is viewed as the most likely Cinderella story. With only 3 losses this season, they are poised for another surprise. Their teamwork and tactical play could propel them to the Sweet 16, particularly if they continue executing their game plan effectively. Yep. They won 30 games for crying out loud.

UCONN

UCONN enters the tournament with a solid 23-10 record and significant experience under pressure. Their key player, Alex Karaban excels in crucial situations, and is a Champion already. This experience positions them well for a postseason run. Not exactly a David vs Goliath, but UConn also could face a #1 seed in R2. Oh, and BTW... they have won the last two National Championships. In case you're wondering, they brought back 3 staters from last year's team - the two that left were both Senior guards, and neither went to the NBA.

High Point

High Point may seem like a long shot, but they possess a unique style that can surprise higher-ranked teams. If they catch fire, they could be a team to watch closely for potential upsets. I like the dart throw at 4.5 to 1 in the opening round. It's great math for March Madness. If not them, who?

Texas Tech

Texas Tech has a well-balanced squad, currently boasting a 25-8 record. Their disciplined defense is effective against even the toughest opponents. Watch out for them in the tournament as they look to build on past success and challenge for the Final Four. Not necessarily a sexy team, but they've beaten some of the best and haven't really had their sshowcaseas of yet.

Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon, slowly building their reputation, has caught the eye with a record of 26-7 Their innovative play style presents unique challenges to higher seeds, making them a team to watch for potential upsets in the early rounds. They dropped 112 on Bryant on Dec 30. Yes, the Bryant who plays Michigan State in R1. I am actually going to moneyline them, too. I digress.

New Mexico

New Mexico has displayed remarkable flashes of talent this season with an 26-7 record. Their capability to surprise might lead to memorable moments, especially in tense early matchups against higher-ranked opponents. I like the Sweet 16 for the son of Rick Pitino, Richard Pitino. I also love the Father/Son dynamic as it hits close to home with March of Madness.

Memphis

Memphis is loaded with talent boasting a record of 29-5. Their high-paced game and scoring options make them a formidable opponent. If they find their rhythm, they could deliver game-changing performances during March Madness. They are sneaky good and have been waiting to turn up the heat. They have a legit shot at the Final Four. They lost in the Maui Invitational Finals to Auburn.

Baylor

Baylor, champions not too long ago, look to make another deep run. With a strong roster despite a 19-14 record, they rely heavily on their experience and blend of athleticism. This mix continues to make them a dangerous team in every matchup. The better the program, the more they tend to show up in the Big Dance.

Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt, with a record of 20-12, has the potential for surprises. Their fresh energy and disruptive strategy can challenge more established teams. They could become a fan favorite if they find their game. The SEC is so good. Vandy is battle-tested and likely to be looked past. That would be a mistake.

Kentucky

Kentucky remains a perennial contender with an impressive 22-11 record. Their deep roster of talented players positions them for a serious run in the tournament. Expect them to deliver strong performances against their competition. This team won impressively early in the season, and that was with two dynamite freshmen. I think they've been "staying healthy".

Auburn

Auburn's consistency, highlighted by a record of 28-5, makes them formidable, but 3 of those losses came in the past 3 weeks or so. Their ability to thrive under pressure will be crucial to their success in the tournament. Watch them closely as they make their bids for advancement. I am pulling for Bruce Pearl to get his first NCAA Championship. The fact that they didn't win their conference tournament makes me like them that much more.

Florida (if Olivier Rioux plays)

Olivier Rioux, a towering 7'9" presence, could give Florida a game-changing edge. If he steps onto the court, the Gators' chances against higher-ranked teams improve significantly. His height and skill level might sway both fans and bettors. See my blog post on him.

Bears: Teams I'm Bearish On

Duke

Although Duke boasts a strong basketball legacy and they are a #1 seed, their current form raises concerns. Their inconsistency could lead to struggles against stronger opposition, especially in tense, close games. Cooper Flagg is so much of that team that I see him getting doubled and pressured in ways he hasn't seen. He'll be a great Pro, though.

Houston

Houston performed well during the regular season, finishing with a 30-4 record, but March Madness brings its own set of pressures. This team faces too many weak teams to be fully ready to carry the load of a true 1-seed.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin’s traditional playing style may not hold up against faster-paced, high-scoring teams. Their chances of an early exit in the tournament are considerable, given their last few performances.

Texas A&M

With a record of 22-10 Texas A&M has faced challenges against tougher teams this season. They may struggle under the tournament's intensity, which could hinder their success. On the other hand, playing in the SEC may make things so much easier. Maybe it's their colors I don't like. Hmm...

Kansas

Once a dominant force, Kansas has shown vulnerabilities with a 21-12 record this year. Tough matchups could expose weaknesses, leaving them open to early upsets. Yes, they are still Kansas, and this tournament marks a record with 35 consecutive appearances. That is impressive. I just don't think they are.

Michigan State

Michigan State’s rollercoaster season has made them unpredictable. Their inconsistency could be detrimental in high-stakes tournament situations, where every game counts. I believe they are most undeserving of a 2-seed. But I love Tom Izzo, fa shizzo!

Maryland

Although Maryland has a solid resume, they have faltered in key moments throughout the season. Their track record suggests they could be at risk for an early tournament upset. Then again, the turtle has been known to beat a few rabbits.

Oregon

Oregon has struggled with overall depth this year and might find themselves outmatched against tougher teams. Their chances for advancement seem slim, but they should get through the first round, one could expect being favored.

Iowa State

Despite respectable rankings, Iowa State's adaptability remains in question. They may encounter difficulties in early matchups, especially against lower-seeded teams looking to prove themselves. This team has a high floor, but I think the ceiling is shorter than a #3 seed's should be.

Mississippi State

Mississippi State has been shaky at crucial moments this season, leading to potential disappointments in the tournament. They must find consistency to advance. Can I just say it??? BORING! Now that one may come back to bite me.

Alabama

While Alabama has shown flashes of brilliance, their inconsistent performances might lead to uncertainty as they enter the tournament. They will need to find their footing to avoid an early exit. They can put up a hundo with little problem, and they have one of the best guards in the country. I just have a problem with programs known for sports other than hoops the year after they made a Final 4 and didn't win it all. As a 2-seed, I don't see them making the Elite 8, which a two should.

Missouri

With a record of 22-11 in the SEC, Missouri may struggle against tougher competition in the tournament. Their current form raises concerns about how far they can advance. They have some serious height, so some consistenly bad shooting on part of their opponents could open up a major rebounding advantage that could carry them.

Florida (sans Olivier Rioux)

If Olivier Rioux does not play, Florida's chances diminish significantly. Without his towering presence, they could slip in earlier matchups, impacting their overall tournament strategy. No matter what happens to the 1-seed in the West Region, I expect them to win it all next near!

Final Thoughts

March Madness is an exhilarating time filled with surprises and thrills. This year's tournament promises to be exciting, with teams highlighted as potential Bulls and Bears offering numerous stories. By identifying the standout teams and understanding the risks, you can make informed choices for your bracket and bets.

As the tournament unfolds, there will be chaos, unexpected Cinderellas, and heartbreaking losses. That’s the essence of March Madness! Fans will flock to sportsbooks, and every game will keep the excitement alive!
